Weaver Lake: A Science, Math & Technology School hosts STEM in Action Night

Weaver Lake: A Science, Math & Technology School hosted a STEM in Action Night for students to showcase projects that they have been working on this school year to their parents/caregivers.

Scholars have been working on special first value added projects based on what grade level they’re in. At the event, students and their parents/caregivers went from classroom to classroom, looking at other student’s projects and seeing what lessons they’ve been learning and what tools they’ve used.

In the fifth grade classrooms, students used an Adobe Spark storyboard to plan out their video about bees. They included the importance of bees and other pollinators, bee trapping and lab identification, bee colony trends, threats to pollinators and an advocacy message.

In the fourth grade classrooms, students took artistic license and created a symmetric, colorful macroinvertebrate. Starting with their name in cursive, they made a reflection of it, and then designed a macro from there. They designed original macros with adaptations needed in their ecosystems, and used a brace map to create it in clay. Fourth graders also researched feeding, breathing and movement adaptations and described them in an Adobe Spark video. 

In the third grade classrooms, students learned about adaptive traits of grove snails, including shell color and strength. They used biomimicry to then solve a problem in the real world using one of those traits. The students made and printed 3D designs. 

Second grade students learned about life cycle plates. Students used different materials to represent what they learned about the life cycle stages of the Madagascar hissing cockroach.

First graders used the brace map design and common materials to engineer their original insects. They used their problem-solving skills if materials did not work as planned to successfully create their own insects.

Guests from programs such as the Eastman Nature Center, University of Minnesota and Crimson Robotics team were present at the STEM in Action Night. Students could learn more about various science, technology, engineering and math activities at these stations and take part in fun experiments. The Crimson Robotics team allowed students to drive their robot.
